About Protected Landscape Area Beskydy

Protected Landscape Area Beskydy is the largest protected area in the Czech Republic, located in the eastern part of the country along the border with Slovakia and Poland. This region encompasses the Moravian-Silesian Beskids mountain range, characterized by rolling highlands, thick mixed forests, and steep ridges reaching elevations up to 1,324 meters at Lysá hora, the highest peak. The landscape is predominantly covered by beech, fir, and spruce forests, providing habitat to a variety of Central European wildlife including lynx, deer, and rare bird species such as the black stork and the eagle owl. Founded in 1973, the area was established to protect its valuable natural environment and cultural heritage, including preserved traditional mountain villages. Visitors can enjoy extensive hiking and mountain biking trails, winter sports like cross-country skiing, and nature observation opportunities. Key landmarks include the summit of Lysá hora with panoramic views, the picturesque Velká Čantoryje peak on the Slovak border, and the Čeladná and Pustevny recreational centers offering amenities and cultural attractions. The Beskydy area also hosts well-maintained mountain huts and educational trails that interpret local flora, fauna, and traditional rural life. Its combination of natural beauty, biodiversity, and accessible outdoor activities makes it a popular destination for family outings, adventure seekers, and wildlife enthusiasts.
